What is umbrella insurance and when do you actually need it?

Published on Mar 27, 2025 by Glover Family Creative Team

When it comes to insurance, most of us are familiar with the basics — auto, home and renters insurance. These policies provide vital coverage for everyday risks, but what happens when the unexpected strikes? When the costs exceed your primary policy's limits? There’s an extra type of insurance that’s not quite as well known designed for these exact moments, and it’s called umbrella insurance. Think of it as an added layer of protection for life’s curveballs. Today, we’re going to dive into more details on what umbrella insurance is, discuss how exactly it works, who might need it and, finally, how it can complement your existing policies.

What exactly is umbrella insurance?

Umbrella insurance is a type of personal liability insurance designed to provide coverage beyond the limits of your standard policies, which in our case means your regular automotive insurance policy. It kicks in when the costs of a claim surpass the coverage limits of your primary policies. For example, if you're found at fault for a serious car accident that results in medical bills and lawsuits exceeding your auto policy’s liability limit, umbrella insurance can cover the remaining costs.

How does it work with existing policies?

Umbrella insurance is actually never a standalone policy, it will always be added to an existing policy. Instead of replacing your policy it works in tandem with it. Here are a few examples of how:

  • Primary Policy Exhaustion. Umbrella insurance comes into play only after you’ve exhausted the liability limits of your primary policies. For instance, if your auto insurance provides $100,000 in liability coverage, and you’re sued for $150,000 following an accident, your umbrella policy would cover the remaining $50,000.
  • Wider Scope of Coverage. While standard policies are limited to specific incidents, umbrella insurance broadens your protection. It often covers legal fees, settlement costs and damages in a variety of scenarios, including those not directly tied to your vehicle.
  • Affordability. One of the surprising advantages of umbrella insurance is its cost-effectiveness. Since it only kicks in after your primary policies’ limits are met, the premiums are typically much lower than those of standard policies.

Who needs umbrella insurance?

Although it might sound like it on paper, umbrella insurance is not something that’s just for the wealthy. As mentioned, it’s surprisingly affordable considering the amount of coverage you typically get, so it’s honestly for anyone who wants peace of mind in the face of potential financial risks.

No one plans an automotive accident, that’s right there in the definition, and there’s no set limit to what having one might cost. Accidents like these can lead to significant liability claims, especially as the number of vehicles or serious injuries involved rises. A lot of auto policies don’t offer enough coverage to deliver peace of mind for these greater risks, but umbrella insurance can prevent you from facing financial ruin in the face of such events.

When do you actually need it?

Determining whether or not you actually need to add an umbrella insurance policy to your coverage involves assessing the potential risk factors associated with vehicle ownership and your own driving habits. If you frequently drive in high-traffic areas, own multiple vehicles or operate vehicles with higher liability exposure – such as SUVs or trucks used for towing – you’re at greater risk of accidents or costly claims.

Umbrella insurance can also be crucial if you carpool regularly, if you let others drive your car under your policy or if you use your vehicle for ride sharing or making deliveries. Even unexpected scenarios like accidents involving uninsured or underinsured motorists could lead to financial strain, but umbrella insurance ensures you’re prepared for these situations.
