5 Auto-Policy Discounts You Might Miss

Published on Jul 29, 2025 by Glover Family Creative Team

Insurance isn’t inexpensive. We’re well aware of this fact, and we believe that protecting your vehicle shouldn’t completely drain your wallet. Here at Glover Family Independent Insurance, we’re always going to do our best to get you the best possible price for the best possible policy to suit your needs. While you might already be aware of some of the bigger saving options available – such as bundling home and auto – there are plenty of other discounts you might miss, but we’re here to make sure you don’t. Today we’re going to do that by highlighting 5 such discounts, so you know what to look for when shopping for insurance.

Good Student Discount

If you’ve got a high school or college student on your policy – even if they’re not the primary driver – you should encourage them to get the best grades they can. Most major providers out there offer a nice discount for students who maintain good grades, typically a “B” average or higher. Many will even let these discounts stack if you’ve got more than one good student on the policy, so get the whole family involved to maximize savings! Just make sure you hang onto those report cards and transcripts to show off at your policy meetings.

Defensive Driving Courses

While attending extra driving courses doesn’t exactly sound like the best way to spend your day off, it can be a good idea in the long run. Certified defensive driving courses teach safe driving techniques designed to mitigate the risk of accidents, which is a behavior that insurance agencies like to reward. While it’s encouraged for senior or newer drivers, any driver could see a discount of up to 10% savings by providing proof of certification.

Low Mileage Discount

If you’re the type of person that wonders why they have to pay as much as everybody else does when you use your vehicle less than half as often, you’ll be interested in the low mileage discount. These are designed for drivers who long fewer miles annually than average drivers, which greatly decreases the risk of accidents and even wear and tear. Remote workers, retirees, multi-car families who use one less than the other(s) — these are just a few examples of the types of people who might benefit from this discount. Make sure you can prove your annual mileage and then schedule a policy review to see if you qualify!

Telematics & Usage-Based Programs

If you think you have good driving habits and are willing to let your insurer figure out if it’s true, you might be interested in a telematics or usage-based program. By signing up for one of these programs, you typically agree to a mobile app or a plug-in device that’s capable of tracking your driving habits and delivering that data right to your provider. Brake gently, avoid late-night cruising and showcase safe habits overall and you might earn a meaningful discount in time. No accidents? No speeding? Reward yourself by agreeing to one of these programs.

Affinity & Group Discounts

Did you know that you can also get discounts based on groups you’re a part of or possibly even through your employer? Many insurers partner with professional organizations, alumni associations, unions and places of business to offer reduced rates to their members. They’re not always well advertised, so if you’re a member of something that might fit the bill you should reach out to leadership or your agent to discuss the possibility of a discount. First responders, teachers, active duty military, veterans, AARP card carriers and even Costco members might be eligible for this kind of discount, so do some research to find out if you are!

If you have any questions or would like to find out which discounts you qualify for, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right here at Glover Family Independent Insurance at your earliest convenience.
